FedEx Ground Eyes Oregon Site For New Distribution Hub
A division of Freight conglomerate FedEx, FedEx Ground has today broken ground on a new site in Troutdale Oregon, the site to host a FedEx Ground distribution hub that will be double the size of the existing operation in Portland, Oregon. The new hub part of a nationwide network expansion aimed at boosting daily package volume capacity and enhancing the speed and service capabilities of the FedEx network.
The 415,000 square-foot facility will be built in the new Troutdale Reynolds Industrial Park in Troutdale,
and will cost about $100 million dollars, including land acquisition as well as construction and material-handling equipment. The facility due to open in 2010 will initially handle 25,000 packages per hour, that figure growing to 45,000 packages per hour, after a projected expansion.
Speaking to the developments for FedEx in Oregon, the Vice President of of the Western Division for FedEx Ground, John Hiltz, said that “Enhancing our distribution capability in the Northwest is an important step in our ongoing efforts to increase the size, speed and efficiency of our network.” Hiltz also noted that the significantly larger Troutdale facility, would enable FedEx to “meet the growing demand of local shippers and transport shipments across the country.”
With access to major highways as well as being in close proximity to numerous customer distribution centres, the Troutdale site is set to be a valuable addition to the company’s six-year network enhancement and expansion program. The program according to FedEx having already delivered accelerated ground service delivery by one day or more in more than half of the United States, as well as an increase in average daily packages volumes from 2.1 million in 2003 to more than 3.3 million today.
