Natural Gas Shore to Ship Power Supply Tested in Los Angeles

Japanese container shipping line, Mitsui OSK Line and California’s CleanAir Logix Incorporated have announced the successful test of a liquefied natural gas fuelled, shore power supply system on the container ship MOL Enterprise.

The test was conducted at Port of Los Angelesthe Port of Los Angeles using a CleanAir Logix system that saw a Liquid Natural Gas (LNG)fuelled generator supply power through a cable to the bow thruster motor of the MOL Enterprise, with, according to Mitsui OSK Line, only two of the MOL Enterprise four heavy fuel oil onboard generators running during the test.

The use of the LNG as a fuel for power generation as opposed to the heavy fuel oil as used in ships generators is considered a more environmentally friendly option for the maritime industry, with the LNG fuelled generator substantially reducing emissions of pollutants such as Nitrogen Oxide and Sulphur Oxide.

The test took place in front of officials from the Port of Los Angeles, with Mitsui OSK Lines aiming to use the results of the test as a means to develop and provide shore power supply sources at the port, which the shipping company hopes will lead to better environmental practices.
