More Canadian Airports Approved for Transshipment Program
The Canadian Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, the Honourable Lawrence Cannon last week announced that three more of of the countries airports have qualified for the international air cargo transshipment program.
The three airports concerned, Prince George Airport, Toronto Pearson International Airport and Halifax Stanfield International Airport, have now received approval to participate in the program. The approval specifically allowing the airports to move air cargo through the airports for shipment to third countries.
It is hoped that the inclusion in the transshipment program will allow the three airports to seek new market opportunities and further develop air cargo activity. Such activity is already commonplace at numerous airports throughout Canada, since 1982 the international air cargo transshipment program has been gradually expanded and as of this expansion sees thirteen Canadian airports participating in the program.
Minister Cannon speaking to the addition of the three airports to the program said that "Our government is pleased to have the international air cargo transshipment program in place" and that the three airports will now have "an additional tool to help develop its air cargo business, which will benefit the local economy."
Having conducted a recent review of international airport policy, the government, through department Transport Canada, has determined that the nations airports should be given the freedom to attract cargo transshipment activity where there are market opportunities, in line with the governments Blue Sky international air policy.
